Story from: Bernadette Varela, Teacher and M.Ed. Graduate, Moravian College
A colleague recently asked me, “Why do you do all this research? It’s a lot of extra work, isn’t it?” As I struggled to compose the short answer, I realized that I may benefit more than my students do from my action research. I’ve always considered myself a life-long learner (it’s one of my core beliefs), so I began looking at my passion for action-research as a series of life lessons.
Life Lesson #1: What I do in the classroom matters!
I’ve been conducting annual action research for about four years now, as part of my graduate studies and through the National Writing Project, and I can honestly say it shapes my practice on a daily basis. I’ve learned to look more deeply into my students’ work, their questions, their responses to one another’s questions, and to really look at each student as a learner, not just as a body in my class.
